Lingle Missouri
Lingle runs for Mizzou at the Penn Relays

On this day 52 years ago, Robin Lingle ’60 finished 5th in the 1500 meters at the NCAA Championships.

The former Brooker ran a University of Missouri record time of 3:42.0 in front of 12,000 at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field. In a deep field, only 4.4 seconds separated the seven runners and the top two finishers broke the NCAA, meet, and Hayward Field records in the process, besting the previous mark of 3:40.9. Just one day earlier, Lingle set the Hayward Field 1500 record with a 3:45.6 time in the trials. It would be 11 years before the record was broken at Mizzou and it remains the second-best time ever recorded by a Tiger.

Lingle’s performance at the NCAAs capped a season in which he was the Conference Champion in the mile (4:05.9) and the 5,000 yards (14:26.9) and an All-American in the mile after a 3rd place finish at the NCAA Championships.
