On this day 17 years ago, Derek Kenney ’98 recorded a career-high 15 saves to lead the University of Virginia past Johns Hopkins University, 16-11, in the NCAA Tournament Semifinals.

The stellar netminding by the former Bear allowed the third-seeded Cavaliers to upset the second-seeded Blue Jays. Two days later, Virginia would win its second National Championship and first in 27 years with a 12-10 victory over Syracuse. In the final, Kenney turned away 12 shots and became the first freshman starting goalie to win a National title since 1987.
