This morning, Jyles Etienne finished 2nd in the high jump at the 122nd Penn Relays held at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field.
His leap of 6′ 9″ bested thirteen of the best high school jumpers from across the world, but fell just short of the first place mark of 6′ 11.5″. Etienne cleared the opening height of 6′ 3.5″ on his first attempt, 6′ 5″ on his second attempt, and 6′ 6.75″, 6′ 7.75, and 6′ 9″ on his first attempt before falling short at 6′ 11.5″ Despite being the runner-up, Etienne still received the iconic Penn Relays gold watch for being the top American finisher in his event. Etienne has dual citizenship between the United Sates and the Bahamas. 6′ 9″ is tied for the highest mark by an American since 2013.
The junior Bahamian is only the third Brooker to compete at the Penn Relays as an individual and his performance measured up to the Blue and White standard. In 1979 Andy Whitney won the 2 mile in a blazing 9:06.2. One year later, Andy’s younger sister Laura took the bronze in the 3000 meters. Etienne’s silver gives the Bears a full complement of medals at one of the most prestigious track and field events in the world.
