On this day 51 years ago, Robin Lingle ’60 finished first in the 1,000 yard run to help the University of Missouri win the NCAA Indoor Track National Championship.

In the meet’s inaugural year, the former Brooker paced the field in the 1,000 in a time of 2:09.9 to become Stony Brook’s first collegiate individual National Champion. Lingle and four teammates scored 14 points to edge Big Eight Conference rival Oklahoma State who compiled 12 points (each team brought five athletes to the meet).

Two days later, Lingle would set the collegiate and American records in the 1,000 yard run in the USTFF Championships in Milwaukee, resetting the marks in a time of 2:07.3. He also qualified for two NCAA Outdoor Championships before his time at Mizzou was up, placing 5th in the 1500 meters in 1964 and 3rd in 1965.
