On this day 18 years ago, Rebecca Fischer, only a junior at the time, scored her 1,000th point during a Suffolk Class C semifinal game, becoming the first girls’ basketball players in school history to accomplish that feat. Here is the recap from Newsday.
The game did not stop and flowers weren't handed out.Few people in Stony Brook's gym knew what Rebecca Fischer had done. The junior center for Stony Brook scored her 1,000th career point yesterday, but reaching the milestone was overshadowed by the fact that she led her team to its second straight trip to the Class C girls basketball final. With 1:57 left in the game, Fischer hit a jump shot to reach the plateau in second-seeded Stony Brook's 44-31 win over No. 3 Mattituck.
The Bears would finish the season 16-4 and earn a second straight League Championship. In Fischer’s final season in 1999, the Bears would win a third consecutive League title.
