The boys’ basketball team was well represented on the postseason awards list, decided upon yesterday evening at the League VIII Coaches Meeting. The Bears, winners of four out of the last five League VIII Championships, had four players honored by the coaches for their performance throughout the regular season.
Chester Kayonga (13.5 ppg/3.6 apg/4.9 rpg/39 three-pointers) was unanimously chosen as an All-League honoree. Joining him on the All-League list was Luke O’Connor (15.1 ppg/4.9 rpg/37 three-pointers) and Jyles Etienne (8.3 ppg/9.9 rpg/59 blocks).
Kayonga and O’Connor were also named to the All-Conference squad, a 14-player list that comprises the best players from Leagues VII and VIII.
Mac Bohuny (6.8 ppg/8.1 rpg/23 blocks/65 offensive rebounds) was a dual recipient for the Bears. Firstly, he was chosen as the team’s representative on the Suffolk County All-Academic team for his 4.0 grade point average. Additionally, he was given League VIII’s Unsung Hero Award for his important and often selfless contributions, that do not show up in the box score, but are vital to the Bears’ success. According to coach Thom Brownworth’s rating system*, Bohuny has the highest player rating on the team at 613.
The Brownworthian Rating Formula*
Points Scored – Two’s Taken + 2 x Fouls Made – Fouls Taken + Fronts Made – Fronts Missed + 2 x Offensive Rebounds + Defensive Rebounds + 2 x Turnovers Caused + 2 x Assists + Deflections + Blocks – Turnovers Committed + Game Goals (see below)
Game Goals = Win(3) + 2pts>40% + 3pts>30% + FT>70% + Op p/p<1 + DReb>70% + OReb>40% + Tovr+5> + game scale (0-5)
