Bears Rout Settlers to Clinch Playoff Berth

This evening, the boys’ basketball team improved to 6-0 in League VIII with a 56-35 victory in Southold to clinch a playoff berth for the 16th consecutive year.

The Bears jumped out to an 18-7 lead after the first quarter and extended the edge to 13 by the halftime break. The Brook did not experience a third quarter doldrum like they did against Port Jeff and Bridgehampton, but continued to push the advantage with a 13-8 third frame and an 11-8 fourth quarter to cement the 21-point win.

Chester Kayonga led the Bears with 17 points while Luke O’Connor (9), Mac Bohuny (9), Harry Zhu (8), Brandon Providence (4), Jyles Etienne (4), John Eshirow (4), and Emil Vaughn (1) gave the Brook a balanced scoring attack. Etienne also corralled 12 rebounds and recorded 7 blocks.

The victory is the Bears’ ninth in a row vs. the Settlers with their last loss coming on Jan. 5, 2011. Coach Mike Hickey is now 29-11 all-time against Southold.

The Bears are scheduled to take the court again Friday night vs. Shelter Island, though the game may be moved to Thursday due to a forecasted snowstorm.
