Bears Outlast Porters to Stay Unbeaten

There are just three undefeated boys’ basketball teams remaining on Long Island including every team among Suffolk and Nassau public schools, the Catholic school league, private schools, and independents. Brentwood (9-0), Northport (10-0), and Stony Brook (8-0).

Tonight the Bears stayed among the ranks of the unbeaten with a 49-44 win at Greenport. As they always do, the Porters made it a battle on Front Street, jumping out to an 11-8 lead after the first quarter. The Bears bounced back with a 16-6 second frame to take a 24-17 lead into the break.

The Brook opened up the lead in the third quarter and took a 10-point lead into the final quarter, maintaining a double-digit lead for most of the quarter, but the Porters chipped away toward the end and cut the final margin to five with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer.

Chester Kayonga led all scorers with 14 points while Luke O’Connor netted 12. Both sharpshooters drained three 3-pointers on Greenport’s soft rims. Jyles Etienne (7), Brandon Providence (6), John Eshirow (6), and Mac Bohuny (4) rounded out the scoring.

This is the Bears’ eighth straight win over the Porters dating back to 2012. Coach Mike Hickey is now 29-21 all-time vs. the purple and gold.
