For the first time in program history, the boys’ basketball team was given the top ranking in New York’s Class C by the New York State Sportswriters Association. In last week’s poll the Bears were given the #2 ranking, but Buffalo Middle College, which occupied last week’s top spot, dropped a second game, allowing the Bears to overtake the #1 slot.
The Bears are off to a 5-0 start including non-league victories over Class A Rocky Point and Class Bs Mercy and Babylon (#16 in New York).
The girls’ soccer team’s top rank after winning the 2009 State Championship is the only other team to ever be given a #1 ranking in Stony Brook history.
The boys take the floor again on Jan. 7 at Port Jeff with a chance to give coach Mike Hickey his 300th career win.
