On this day 18 years ago, Matt Mattimore ’95 scored a touchdown to help Georgetown University upend Duquesne University for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) title.
Duquesne came into the game as the three-time defending MAAC champion and the owners of a 20-game winning streak. However, the Hoyas jumped all over the Dukes from the opening minutes. Just 99 seconds into the game, Georgetown blocked a punt, scooped up the ball, and scored for a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing Duquesne drive, the Hoyas intercepted the ball and took over on offense. Georgetown took advantage of the turnover when Bill Ward found Mattimore on a 47-yard strike that gave the Hoyas a 14-0 lead en route to a 24-0 victory.
The win gave the Hoyas an undefeated 7-0 conference record and an 8-3 overall mark that tied the school record for wins in a season. They also earned their first postseason berth since playing in the 1950 Sun Bowl. Georgetown also tied the school record for consecutive wins with seven, tying the mark set by the 1940 squad.
