No goals, no win for porters in their final game
Scoring goals and winning games is hard. Not that the Greenport High School boys’ soccer team needed to be reminded of that. And yet, there it was, one final reminder.
The Porters closed the curtain on their 2015 season Friday night by honoring their eight seniors on Senior Night and then suffering a 7-0 trouncing at the hands of The Stony Brook School.
Khendrick Beausoleil, a senior forward/midfielder, was involved in five of the goals, scoring three himself and assisting on two others at Greenport’s Dorrie Jackson Memorial Field. Alvaro Martinez Torres, Caleb Rudzitis, and Gabriel Vazquez Abreu each contributed a goal and an assist. Haban Weon put in the final goal for the Bears (5-3 overall and in Suffolk County League VIII), who clinched a playoff berth.
Seungpyo Choi made two saves for the shutout.
It was the fifth straight win for the Bears, who have outscored opponents by 28-3 during the streak.
Stony Brook, which has players from seven countries, outshot the home side by 25-8 and nearly added more goals. Greenport’s goalkeeper, Richard Torres, made a nice diving save with his right hand to deny Martinez Torres in the first half. About five minutes later, a through ball from Caleb Lindo led to Martinez Torres bending a shot that struck off the left goalpost.
The two best scoring chances for the Porters came in the second half. Remi Droskoski forced a diving save by Choi, leaving a rebound that Bayron Rivas smashed into the side netting. Later, Miguel Torres sent a long-range attempt off the crossbar.
The Porters, who finished the season with a 2-12 record (2-8 in League VIII), lost five of their final six games.
