Bears One Win from Playoffs After Mauling Royals

Yesterday afternoon, the boys’ soccer team improved their postseason resume with a 6-0 victory over Port Jefferson.

The Bears may have been tempted to look past the Royals after defeating them 10-0 on September 29, but resisted the urge with an offensive explosion in the first half that gave them an insurmountable 5-0 edge at halftime.

The Blue and White opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Caleb Rudzitis sent a long sideline throw into the box where David Choi headed it into the back of the net. Just over a minute later, Alvaro Martinez Torres gave a neat touch to Gabriel Vazquez Abreu who fired a ball from outside the 18-yard box that skipped over the keeper’s left shoulder and into the net. The scoring run continued two minutes later when Martinez Torres netted one of his own. Ben DiRuggiero sent a ball from midfield that checked up just behind Martinez Torres. The Spaniard gave a deft touch to himself then volleyed it out of the air from 15 yards, while sliding, to give the Brook a 3-0 edge.

After a torrid five minutes of offense, things cooled down for five minutes until Martinez Torres struck again, taking a deflected Haban Weon shot out of the air, and heading it into the left side netting. Before the end of the half, the Brook would extend their lead to 5-0 when Khendrick Beausoleil deftly trapped a Mac Bohuny free kick before striking a shot while falling down that found glory.

Port Jeff played grittier defense in the second half, but despite the Royals’ renewed efforts the boys were able to punch one through. Bohuny’s penchant for dangerous free kicks continued when he sent one into the box where Martinez Torres gave a savvy heel flick to Caleb Lindo who buried the sixth goal of the match.

From there the defense held and Jonathan Chung earned the shutout between the posts. With the victory, the Bears ran their winning streak to four games and improved to 4-3 on the season. They are now one win away from qualifying for the playoffs with three games to play. They will get their first chance on Friday night at Greenport.
