On this day nine years ago, the football team leveled Greenport, 55-7, in their season opener.
The Bears dominated both ends of the field from the outset. Tenacious defense stalled the Porters all day and the offense, catalyzed by running back Terrance Anderson, led a relentless march into the end zone, punctuated by seven made extra points from Mike Cox. Adam Duff was the defensive star of the game with two interceptions, one of which he took all the way back for a touchdown.
Ben Koubek ’07 recalled a memory from that day.
[Brad] Baker said before the game, 'You'd better not let them cross this goal line all game!' And then when the game was over, laughing, he said, 'I guess I should've pointed to both goal lines.'
One week later the Bears would stun perennial power John Glenn on their own field, 36-33, in a thriller. The 91 points they tallied in their first two games nearly met the offensive output of the entire, eight-game 2005 season: 97.
The Bears would go on to have their most successful season since the 1997 squad went 7-3 and won the Big Four Championship. On the way to a 5-3 season, the boys would also earn wins over Mercy, Wyandanch, and Hampton Bays.
Anderson and Mac Drane were named All-County, while Koubek, Duff, Mike Borruso, Shawn Austin, Ryan Mitchell, and Will Jenden were named All-Division.
