A day after a 0-7 defeat to a strong Rocky Point team in a non-league tilt, our girls’ soccer team showed its fortitude yesterday in a 2-1 victory over Class B Hampton Bays on a balmy day on Fitch Field.
The Bears dominated possession for much of the first half and, after several near misses, they tucked away the game’s first goal with 26 minutes remaining in the half. Annie Skorobohaty gave a great throw down the line to Donna Sanders who, after a defensive miscue, dribbled into the box and deftly lofted the ball over the keeper for a 1-0 edge. The Bears would have two more legitimate scoring opportunities before the break, but would settle for a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes.
The possession battle shifted in favor of the Baymen in the second half, but not before the Bears buried the game-winner less than six minutes into the period. Once again it was Sanders and Skorobohaty providing the offense for the Brook. This time Sanders put a gorgeous ball from the right wing onto the doorstep of the goal. Off of a high bounce, Skorobohaty headed the ball into the top shelf, then sustained a body blow from the keeper, to put the Blue and White ahead, 2-0. Over the final 30 minutes, Hampton Bays kept the Bear defense on its heels, but Dahlia Cyrille, Laura Reeve, Alyssa Martinez, and Jessica Nwachukwu were up to the challenge. The Baymen halved their deficit with 17 minutes remaining, but keeper Fiona Farrell made several key saves to preserve the win for the Brook.
The Bears are back in action Friday night at 7:30 as they lure Pierson into the Cave.
