On Friday, at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, NC, Jyles Etienne capped an incredible track season by breaking Stony Brook’s 50-year-old high jump record.
The sophomore finished in 6th place out of 42 jumpers with a leap of 6′ 5.5″, breaking Bernard Mumo’s mark of 6′ 4.75″ set in 1965. The top nine jumpers in the event all missed their three attempts at 6′ 7.5″ and placing was determined based on the number of attempts at previous heights. Etienne cleared the opening height of 6′ 1.5″ on his first attempt, then cleared 6′ 3.5″ and 6′ 5.5″ on his second attempt.
After clearing 6′ 5.5″, Etienne had to endure a two-hour rain delay before attempting 6′ 7.5″ and, though he made several good attempts, was not able to clear it.
