On this day 66 years ago, the track team defeated Poly Prep in a dual meet “for the first time in many years,” as the June 1949 Stony Brook Bulletin alluded.

Captain Bruce Dodd led the way for the Brook, defeating Poly’s George Helfenstein, the New York City cross country and mile champion, in the half mile to establish a new school record of 2:00.8. Twenty minutes later, Dodd’s legs had recovered enough to win the quarter mile in 52.8.
