The 2002 Bears: Gonzalez (Middle row, 2nd from right)

On this day 13 years ago, Juanita Gonzalez pitched a gem in a 16-0 win over John Glenn.

The freshman phenom struck out 10 batters and had a no-hitter intact through five innings when the game was called (in softball the game is over when one team builds a lead of 15 runs). Senior co-captains Emilee Hasbrouck and Catherine Heinze were catalysts offensively and defensively, scoring a combined four runs and anchoring the outfield.

Juanita would finish her career with the Bears in 2005 as the best pitcher in Stony Brook history. She pitched a second no-hitter during her junior season on March 26, 2004 just a few weeks after striking out 20 batters–out of a possible 21 outs–on March 4. When she walked off the mound for the last time she was the most prolific strikeout pitcher in Long Island history with 1,153 for her career.
