On this day 13 years ago, the boys’ basketball team christened the new Robbins hardwood floor of Swanson Gymnasium with a 58-46 victory.
Prior to the game, Headmaster Rob Gustafson presided over a ribbon cutting ceremony to dedicate the new hardwood floor, part of the overall renovation of the Swanson Gymnasium that included improvements to the natatorium and the weight room. The floor, identical to the one used at the time by 28 NBA teams as well as the University of North Carolina and Duke University, replaced the polyurethane surface installed in 1973.
When the game commenced, the Bears did some cutting of their own against the Dade Christian School from Miami, FL. Peter Viljoen scored 17 points while Steve Harney chipped in with 13 to spur the Bears’ attack and help the team improve to 7-2 on the season.
