On this day 18 years ago, Rebecca Fischer scored with five seconds left, thanks to an assist from Brie Edwards, giving the girls’ basketball team a thrilling 42-41 win over Hampton Bays.
In a game that remained tight throughout, Sara Kiernan, who scored 10 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter, drilled a 3-pointer with 1:05 to play that gave the Brook a 40-37 edge. Hampton Bays battled back and after a basket and two free throws held a 41-40 lead, setting up Fischer’s heroics. With the win the Bears improved to 2-0 in the league on the way to the first League Championship in program history.
Fischer finished with 22 points, eight of which came in the pivotal fourth quarter.
