On Friday afternoon, the cross country teams tackled Sunken Meadow State Park for the last time this season in the Section XI Championships.
The Girls Class C/D Championship was the first race of the day and Miranda Harrigan looked strong from the outset. She was in a great position heading into the dreaded Cardiac Hill, then flew through the picnic area on the heels of the Class D leaders with half a mile to go. She mounted a strong comeback around “The Moat” and into the final straightaway, finishing in 3rd place in Class D (8th including Class C runners) in a time of 21:19.
The mark shattered her previous personal best at the Meadow by over 30 seconds. Her high finish qualified her for the New York State Meet. Eighth-grader Lely Garner (8th place/23:34) will be joining her in Canton, NY next weekend with the best runners in New York. Teammates Nicole Gray (14th/24:57), Danielle Sivertsen (15th/25:16), Anna Brummeler (17th/26:03), Cianka Haynes (18th/26:34), and Alma Rojas (24th/28:49) helped the Bears take 3rd place.
Jacob Brummeler raced to a 3rd place finish in the boys’ race in a time of 18:40, earning him a spot on the State Team along with Luis Irias (10th/20:01). John Desan (15th/21:17), Matt Wong (16th/21:38), Tion Wong (19th/21:57), Hyun Cho (20th/22:07), and Henry Zhao (23rd/22:52) also ran well for the Brook, helping them team to a 3rd place finish.
