The girls’ soccer team lost a tough match today, 2-1, to the visiting Tuckers but there was plenty to be excited about despite the setback. Mattituck controlled time of possession in the early part of the first half, and notched their first goal just 11 minutes into the game, but from there the Bears elevated their level of play. Emily Pius had two great shots on goal that forced deft saves from the keeper, and as the half came to a close it was the Brook who was possessing the ball and attacking in waves.
As the second half unfolded the Tuckers had their chances, but the defense held firm thanks to an outstanding performance by Sydney Dunn and some fantastic play by Dahlia Cyrille. As the game moved into the final minutes, the Bears constantly knocked on the door of the goal. After multiple corner kicks and a number of fantastic crosses by Emily Pius, the Bears finally equalized when Pius sent in yet another cross that was deflected before ultimately being put away by Annie Skorobohaty, who always seems to be in the right place at the right time. A minute later the Bears nearly took the lead, but were a stride away from a beautiful pass off the foot of Pius that danced right across the goal. The Bears were the primary attackers in the final moments, but were caught off guard when a deep clear led to a fast break opportunity that the experienced Tuckers used to steal the victory.
There were plenty of positives for the girls to take away from the match. The defense, which has looked vulnerable at times this season, held a very skilled Mattituck team in check for long stretches of the game. Dunn and Cyrille played brilliant soccer and Morgan Pius showed great instincts in goal despite her inexperience at that position. Emily Pius played gorgeous soccer from the right side, wreaking havoc on the Mattituck defense. Her hustle and willingness to share the ball will be key to this team’s success.
Despite the loss there was a glimpse of this team’s championship mettle today. It is reminiscent of last year, when the girls struggled early but found their form, played fantastic soccer over the second half of the regular season, and won the County Championship. There is plenty of talent, skill, and heart on this team. I am already a believer in what they are capable of.
