Bears Brace for Hurricane Irene

Irene crawls toward the Atlantic Coast

As Hurricane Irene continues to maraud along the east coast, leaving an 800-mile wide swath of destruction in its wake, the Stony Brook campus has battened down in anticipation of her heavy rains and 85 mph winds, set to arrive by 9:00am.

Captain George Linzee and his crew spent all day yesterday pulling the school’s dinghy fleet out of Port Jefferson Harbor and depositing them safely into the Field House. The 90th season of Stony Brook athletics will be delayed by as the opening day of practice was changed from Monday morning to Tuesday evening. The football scrimmage vs. St. Dominic’s is still tentatively scheduled for Thursday but may be rescheduled as well.

The last time Long Island was hit by a hurricane was in late September 1985 when Gloria prowled the Atlantic Coast for nearly two weeks with 95 to 100 mph winds.
