Since graduating from Stony Brook in 2008, Thomas Payne has been a force on the Naval Academy’s boxing team. Payne was a three-sport athlete at the Brook, participating in cross country, wrestling, and tennis, but had no experience in the ring as he entered the ranks of the Midshipmen.
His determination and perseverance paid immediate dividends as he earned a spot in the 2009 Brigade Championship, a prestigious tradition at each academy, at 119 pounds. Though he lost the bout to Logan Hershman, his future looked promising. A year later Payne met Hershman again in the Brigade Championship, besting his rival in the grudge match. He continued his fantastic sophomore season by winning the National Championship last April at West Point.
On February 25, Payne again earned a berth in the 70th annual Brigade Championship and won his second consecutive 119-pound crown by defeating William So. As the end of the season draws near, Payne is moving toward another National Title and hopes to bring another championship belt back to Annapolis.
