On this day 33 years ago, the boys’ basketball team won a high-octane battle at Hampton Bays, 100-92. It was the second of three times the Shrikes would reach the century mark that season and the second time they combined for 192 points with the opposing squad, along with their 102-90 victory over Shelter Island on December 15th. In their previous match-up with the Baymen, the Brook triumphed 84-66 on January 6th, a combined 42 points less than their total on this day.
The Blue and White got out to a quick start, winning the opening quarter 25-17 behind 11 points from Brad Hargrave and 9 from Dave Wilson. The duo stayed sharp in the second frame, Hargrave with 8 points and Wilson with 7, to help the Shrikes win it 28-19 for a 17-point halftime edge. Intermission did nothing to slow the Brooker attack as they poured in 28 more points in the third quarter. Wilson exploded for 16 points in the frame on eight field goals to push the lead to 25 entering the final quarter.
The boys looked as though they would cruise to an easy win, but Hampton Bays would not make it so easy on them as they dropped 36 points in the period, cutting their deficit to eight points by the game’s end. Wilson led all scorers with 36 points while Hargrave was the second-leading scorer among both squads with 30. Mark Whitney and John Scanlon added 12 points each.
