On This Day in History | 1959

On this day 52 years ago, several prestigious Stony Brook athletic awards were given out to their worthy recipients. The Vanderveer Memorial Trophy, the school’s oldest athletic award, is given to the football player who best represents on the gridiron what “Bud” Vanderveer exemplified in his life. The 1959 recipient was Richard Green, an athlete known by his classmates for his leadership on the field.

The “49er” Trophy, awarded by the members of the 1949 cross country team, was awarded to the runner who was most valuable to the team in not only his running ability but his contribution to the spirit of the team. The trophy was awarded to junior Robin Lingle who finished 2nd at the Eastern States Championship and led the Brook to a fourth straight Ivy League Championship.

The George F. Eckert Award was given to the grappler whose ability, enthusiasm, and selflessness provided the greatest contribution to Stony Brook wrestling. After an undefeated league season and a 2nd place finish in the Ivy League Tournament, the trophy was deservedly given to Les Sogorka.

The Davenport Award, given to the player whose sportsmanship and leadership on the basketball court best exemplified what a Stony Brook athlete should be, was donated by Roger Davenport ’52. Herbert Geiss was the earned recipient by merit of his sacrificial play and hustle on the hardwood.
