Elmer Nelson (#6) helped the Bruins beat their city rivals

On this day 62 years ago, the basketball team improved to 5-0 on their way to an Ivy League Championship season with a 42-41 win over Poly Prep. Their jaunt in Brooklyn was not an easy one as John Luft went down with an ankle sprain and captain Bob Graham and George Hegeman fouled out of the game.

The contest was close throughout as the Bruins and the Brooklynites were deadlocked at 23-23 at the half. Poly took a 35-33 lead after the third quarter, but the Blue and White battled back in the final frame. With one minute left in the game, Elmer Nelson sank a one-handed shot from beyond the foul circle to win the game. The triumph was a historic one for the Brook as it was the first time they had ever defeated Poly Prep on their own floor.  The above photo still proudly adorns a trophy case in Swanson Gymnasium.
