Senior Trio Leads Girls’ Basketball Past Indians

Jess Winston defends during the girls’ win

The girl’s basketball team has not dropped a League VIII contest since 2008 and seniors Brannon Burke, Natalie Istrati, and Jess Winston made sure the streak remained intact, providing all the scoring in a 41-23 victory over Shelter Island. Istrati led all scorers with 18 points and completed a double-double with 15 rebounds. Burke also earned a double-double with 17 points and 14 boards while Winston chipped in with 6 points and a game-high 7 assists. The Bears will face Pierson/Bridgehampton in their next game on January 11 @ 4:30pm.

By the end of the third quarter, “I saw the energy just get wiped right out of them,” Coach Miedema said. The Indians started giving up easy layups and their plays began to fall apart. Stony Brook scored 26 points in the second half while the Indians scored just 11. The final score was 41-23, Stony Brook.
“Normally we can barely keep it within 40 points with Stony Brook so I was very impressed with the effort, especially defensively,” Coach Miedema said.
