
On this day 53 years ago, the basketball team won their second of six straight games to open the season with a 59-51 overtime win against the King’s Point Merchant Marine Academy JV team.
The Brook trailed the Midshipmen 24-28 at halftime as Rob Bennett and Allan Malachuk combined for 17 points. Bennett continued his hot shooting in the third period, equaling the Pointers’ production in the quarter with 10 points as the Blue and White went into the final frame down, 37-38. Four different players scored a combined 11 points for the Brook in the last quarter and battled the mariners to a 48-48 tie after regular time. Bennett’s hand cooled in the overtime period, but Malachuk filled the void with 7 of the team’s 11 points as the Brook pulled out a win on enemy hardwood. Bennett led all scorers with 22 points while Malachuk was not far behind with 18. Dick Skripak chipped in with 12 points.
