The Bears | Mandungu (#54), Fischer (#34), Mattimore (#33), Spooner (#30)

On this day 17 years ago…

Almost exactly one year to the day that the boys’ basketball came back to defeat Deer Park 75-68, the Brook again downed the Falcons, 82-70, giving Coach Mike Hickey two consecutive wins over his alma mater.

The game began at a frenetic pace as both offenses found their rhythm early. Deer Park led 24-21 after one quarter, but the Bears’ high-octane offense, led by Jonas Fischer and Matt Mattimore, used a 21-11 second frame to take a 42-35 edge into the break. In a pivotal third quarter, the scoring duo accounted for 13 of the Bears’ 21 points and helped build a 63-48 advantage going into the final quarter. Fischer saved his best for when the team needed him most, netting 12 of the team’s 19 fourth quarter points to seal the 82-70 win.

Fischer finished with a game-high 33 points, an impressive second act to his virtuosic 40-point performance vs. the Falcons the previous season. Mattimore poured in 20 points while Nkumu Mandungu and Matt Spooner chipped in with 10 and 8 points, respectively.
