2010-2011 Winter Preview

The boys celebrate a win over Southold in the 2010 County Final. They hope to enjoy more scenes like this come February.

The athletic fields are quiet, but things will be heating up indoors as the basketball teams and wrestling squad begin their seasons.

Boys’ Basketball

2009-2010 Season Review: The boys are coming off perhaps their best season in school history. After finishing 11-3 during the regular season, good enough for second place in League VIII, the boys met Southold in the County Championship. Southold, a team the Brook had fallen to twice during the season, came into the game 18-0 and ranked #4 in New York State, but the Bears pulled off the upset, 50-48, giving coach Mike Hickey his second County Title and first since 2007. They went on the win the Long Island Championship for the first time in school history before bowing out to Blind Brook in the Regional Final.

  • Head Coach: Mike Hickey (23rd year)
  • Captains: Marco Masakayan & Farqu Taylor
  • Key Returners: Tim Pandolfi, Marco Masakayan, Farqu Taylor & Richie Armand
  • Promising Newcomers: Kai Strachan, Jerome Washington & Spencer Cannon
  • Games Circled on the Calendar: Greenport (Home 1/20 @ 4:30pm & Away 2/16 @ 6:15pm) & Port Jeff (Away 1/26 @ 5:45pm & Home 1/28 @ 7:30pm)

2010-2011 Season Outlook: The core of last year’s team is back. Pandolfi will be one of the most dangerous scoring threats in the County. Last season he was named the best player in Section XI’s Class C by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York while averaging 20.4 points per game (5th in Suffolk County/15th on Long Island) and drilling 46 three-pointers (8th in Suffolk County/15th on Long Island). Additionally, Taylor will give the team toughness and leadership, Masakayan and Armand have matured, and the additions of Strachan, Washington, and Cannon will give the team a balanced offense. This team has hopes of winning the league, defending their County and Long Island Titles, and perhaps taking the program to a place it has never been before.

Girls Basketball

2009-2010 Season Review: The girls finished the regular season with a 17-1 record despite matching up with several Class A and AA schools. They earned a sixth consecutive League Championship, their fifth straight in undefeated fashion, won a fifth consecutive County Championship over Southold, then made it back-to-back Long Island Titles in a win over East Rockaway. The girls were unable to get past North Salem to earn a second straight berth into the State Final Four.

  • Head Coach: Amy Helm (1st year; 10 years previous experience as a head or assistant coach)
  • Captains: Brannon Burke, Jessica Winston & Natalie Istrati
  • Key Returners: Brannon Burke, Jessica Winston, Natalie Istrati & Emily Stone
  • Promising Newcomers: Danielle Pappas & Ariana Odom
  • Games Circled on the Calendar: Pierson (Home 1/11 @ 4:30pm & Away 2/8 @ 6:15pm) & Southold (2/14 @ 6:15pm)

2010-2011 Season Outlook: The girls lost some key weapons from last year’s squad, namely Sadie Singer (the team’s leader) and Candace Baker (the team’s best defender), but enough pieces of the squad are back for the girls to make a run at a seventh straight League Title, a sixth straight County Title, and a third straight Long Island Title.

Wrestling

2009-2010 Season Review: Last year the boys struggled as a team, finishing their dual meet season, 5-12, but strong individual performances, including Tyler Anderson’s 3rd place finish in the County Tournament, showed that the team had something on which to build.

  • Head Coach: Mark Maningo (7th year)
  • Captain: Tyler Anderson
  • Key Returners: 8th-grader Hunter Hulse @ 96 lbs, sophomore Austin Hulse @ 125 lbs & senior Tyler Anderson @ 171 lbs
  • Promising Newcomers: Paul Chung &  Wyatt Piazza both return to the squad after a year away
  • Matches Circled on the Calendar: The 27th Annual Brohard Tournament (1/22 @ 9:00am) & Delaware County Christian Tournament (1/29 @ 8:00am)

2010-2011 Season Outlook: The boys will face a difficult dual meet schedule but look forward to some strong individual performances in several important tournaments.
