Volleyball 2010: Season Review

Our Seniors: Winston, Istrati, Boss, Moley & Samiat Awonsaya

It is not hyperbolic to say that for the second year in a row the volleyball team had its most successful season in program history. They finished the regular season at 13-2 with their only two losses coming to a powerful Shelter Island squad. A few of their amazing regular season statistics include:

  • 13 wins — the most in program history
  • Outscoring their opponents 1150-799 in points
  • Outscoring their opponents 40-8 in games
  • Registering 11 sweeps
  • A string of 18 consecutive games won over a period of six matches
  • Holding their opponents to 15 points or less in a game 23 times

Led by seniors Natalie Istrati, Christine Boss, Jess Winston, and Emma Moley, this team played with both their heads and hearts all season, earning them a trip to the Class D County Championship for the second straight year. They battled valiantly against one of the best small school teams on Long Island, but eventually fell 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 to the Indians. Over a two-year period, these girls have raised the bar of Stony Brook volleyball, earning a 24-5 regular season record over that time and two berths in the County Final. While this year’s crop of seniors will be sorely missed, Coach Leslie Paige is more than optimistic about the young talent that will seek to fill their void and continue to raise the reputation of Blue and White volleyball.
