In some ways it was a difficult year for Coach Jake Morley’s boys.
The year began with a loss to Southold, their only competition in Class D, and finished the season with a 1-4 record. However, for much of the dual meet season the Blue and White had not been running at full strength, with various runners coming back from injuries and working their way back into shape. Fortunately for the Brook, they were at their healthiest in time for a rematch with Southold in the County Championship on November 5.
After both teams had traversed the 3.1-mile course at Sunken Meadow State Park, the Bears and Settlers were deadlocked with a 28-28 score. In order to determine a champion, the officials went to the tiebreaker and it was Darryl Baker, Stony Brook’s sixth runner, who placed in front of Southold’s fifth and sixth runners to earn the 13th Suffolk County Title in program history. The team went on to represent the Brook at the New York State Meet in Pawling, NY, joining a host of other Blue and White harriers that have gone before them. While they may not have been as powerful a team as some in the past, what remained constant was the courage and perseverance they displayed throughout their season, enabling them to earn another trophy to go along with countless others in our indelible running tradition.
