The Mighty Bears | Hanchett (6th row, 1st on right), Kenney (6th row, 2nd from right), (Top row, 1st on left), Nixon (Top row, 2nd from right)

On this day 14 years ago…

After a scoreless first quarter, the football team put up 20 points in the second frame, catalyzed by a touchdown pass from Derek Kenney to Charlie Hanchett. Scores by Kenney, Chris Drew, and Barrett Nixon followed to help the Brook build an insurmountable lead. With the Bears leading 27-0 with 3:12 in the fourth quarter, the game was called after five Monarchs were ejected for fighting and insulting an official.

The rainy and windy conditions did not stop the Bears from racking up 303 yards of offense, led by Kenney’s 112 passing yards, while the defense limited Mercy to an anemic 64 yards. Hanchett racked up 282 all-purpose yards (122/kickoffs, 108/punts, 52/receiving) to frustrate the Mercy defense and special teams at every turn.
