Girls’ Soccer Rudely Returns to Mercy

Gianna Scavo (shown here vs. Ross) notched 3 assists yesterday

Last Wednesday, the girls’ soccer team drove all the way to Riverhead for a match with Mercy only to be told it could not be played as they stepped on the field. The rain over the previous few days had turned the field into a mud slick and standing water was visible all over the pitch. It was obvious the surface was unplayable, but apparently not to Mercy until the Bears had driven the length of the Long Island Expressway. As the girls walked back to the buses the Monarchs chided them saying, “See you later! Sorry about the drive!” Call it a stay of execution.

Yesterday afternoon the girls traveled to Mercy again and, despite missing the irreplaceable Kierran Petersen with a deep contusion, thoroughly trounced their hosts 3-0. Sarah Sullivan scored her first two goals of the season on one-timers from the left and right sides and Emily Pius added a third goal, just one game after scoring her very first varsity goal. Gianna Scavo had a tremendous performance, assisting all three scores. Danielle Pappas and her defense recorded their third shutout and have allowed just two goals over the past four games.
