The Blue and White

On this day 66 years ago…

On a Saturday afternoon the football team won the inaugural game of the season, 12-6, on Poly Prep’s own turf in Dyker Heights. It was the first contest for both teams, evidenced by the eight combined turnovers, but the Brook did just enough to prevail against Poly for the second straight year.

Early in the first quarter, the Blue and White got on the board when Charlie Medd passed to Dave Swanson, who lateralled to Captain Don Walker who bulled his way to Poly’s 4 yard line. On the very next play, Walker took it over the line for a 6-0 lead. The Brooker offense stalled in the second frame, but was awoken again in the third quarter by the arms of Medd and Don Drake who drove the boys to the Poly four. Once again it was Walker who plunged across for the score. With the game seemingly in hand, the Brook appeared poised to score again when Poly intercepted a pass and raced down the field for a 97-yard touchdown. Galvanized, the Poly offense made a late push to tie the game, but the Big Blue defense, led by Bill Graham, stood tall. The Brooker line held Poly to a mere 56 yards of offense while our boys piled up 237 yards.

The rather close score does not do justice to the superiority of the Stony Brook squad.
