On this day 54 years ago…
At the start of the 1956 cross country season, the Blue and White harriers had an impressive five Ivy League Championships in their lineage, but what the ’56 squad could not have known was they were destined to win the second in a string of fifteen consecutive Ivy titles. They opened their campaign against rival Poly Prep and promptly swept the Brooklynites off their own course by a perfect 15-50 margin. Dick Sprague paced the team, covering the 2.5-mile course in 12:32. The next seven finishers in the race were Brookers as Stony Brook Hall of Famer Tonnie Coane, Wain Barnes, Gordon MacDonald, Ken Sabol, Jim Ross, Lee Reineke, and Pete Treiber completed the mastery of Poly.
It was the first meet of the season for Marvin Goldberg's defending champions, who have won the last 5 meets.~ October 1956 Stony Brook Bulletin
