In yesterday’s three-way match-up at Sunken Meadow State Park with Pierson and Mattituck, our girls’ cross country team outpaced the competition by sweeping Pierson, 15-50, and dominating the Tuckers, 20-38. With the two wins the girls improved to 3-1 in League VIII, giving them a 2nd place standing behind Southold. Here are Coach Heidi Nathan’s thoughts on their performance:
The weather was perfect for the race. The rain held off and the sun came out to warm it up. Margot Rashba took 1st place with a great lead in both races. Kathy Kim took 2nd against Mattituck and 3rd against Pierson and Ayana Aaron took 4th place in both races. The girls did great pushing themselves to run closer with teammates and pushing each other throughout the race. There were smiles, laughs, and a good time racing to fast finishes. A couple of girls were only 1-2 seconds from their personal records. Almost all the girls ran their fastest times this season and are still running faster than where they were at this time last season. Overall the team is going at a great pace and I’m very proud of where they are at right now.Our next meet is the Westhampton Beach Invitational 5k at Indian Island on Thursday. We’ll have a week off from competition for quality workouts before our last dual meet of the season against Center Moriches, then the postseason competitions begin with Southold as our primary competitor.
