Girls tennis 1990: (Front) J. Motychova, Fenkl, Maria Lofgren, Beermann (Back) Coach Fred Jordan, Rising, Crowley, Sweet, Teurfs, Mohiuddin, Jannello

On this day 20 years ago, Southampton came to the Stony Brook tennis courts as one of the toughest teams in League VII. All-Conference singles player Porter Beermann lost the opening match to the eventual Conference runner-up Rita Klissas (4-6, 4-6), but the next three singles players picked up their teammate.

All-League player Adeeb Mohiuddin defeated her Mariner opponent (6-3, 6-3), Ali Jannello cruised to a 6-4, 6-0 decision, and Kate Knecht won the pivotal match in a tiebreaker (6-3, 7-6 (7-4)).  The Bears seized the win when the 1st doubles team of Arden Teurfs and Christy Sweet pulled out a three-set decision, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Stony Brook dropped the last two doubles matches but it was of little consequence as the Brook sent the Mariners back to the east end with a 4-3 loss.
