Bears Close 2021 with Devil of a Win

Humpert slams vs. Mattituck (PC: Bruce Jeffrey)

On Wednesday afternoon, the boys’ basketball closed the year with a resounding 75-47 non-league win over Center Moriches. The win snapped a four-game losing streak to one of Long Island’s strongest programs and winners of the last four Long Island Class B Championships as well as the 2019 overall County Championship. The Bears’ last win over the Red Devils came on Jan. 20, 2004 in a 64-51 victory on Frowein Road.

Wednesday’s match-up was not as close as the Bears took control from the outset and never let up. The Brook held a 17-13 lead after one, thanks to 14 combined points from Oskar Humpert and Gustav Skogsjo, punctuated by a baseline drive and thunderous one-handed dunk by Humpert in the waning seconds. The Bears then unleashed a 26-6 second frame that gave them a commanding 43-19 advantage at the half on enemy hardwood. Skogsjo and Humpert each went off for ten points in the frame to lead the surge.

In the second half, the Blue and White was never threatened as the Bears carried a 60-33 lead into the fourth quarter, thanks in part to a putback slam from Humpert, before cruising to the 75-47 win. The win was made all the more impressive as the Bears were without the services of starters CJ Edwards and Niks Zemitis and had only two reserves on the bench.

Skogsjo finished with a game-high 30 points, including four 3-pointers, while Humpert formed the second half of a dynamic duo with 27 points and 16 rebounds. Randolph Logan added 8 points, Jacob Lippe 6, Michael Xiang 2, and Anthony Zajac 2.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday in an evening match-up at Monsignor McClancy in Queens.
