This afternoon, the girls’ tennis team retained its PSAA crown with a 3-2 win over Portledge to claim their third tournament title in four years. Today’s final was a rematch of the 2018 and 2020 title matches, which the Bears won 4-1 and 3-2, respectively, over the Panthers. It was also the first final the Bears hosted on their home courts, and they made the most of their familiar surroundings.

Carina Cristobal once again set the tone for the Brook, winning her first singles match, 6-0, 6-1, to stake the Bears to the match’s first point. Alanna Wu followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win at no. 2 singles, but the Bears dropped third singles and first doubles within moments of each other as the Panthers drew even, 2-2. Both teams rushed over to watch the result of the fifth and final match with where the winning result hung in the balance.

The Championship came down to the second doubles match and a pair of seventh-graders. Mia Lajmi and Ali Cristobal got the job done, splitting the first two sets, 4-6, 6-4, and before winning a super-tiebreaker, 10-8, in lieu of a third set. On the final point, Portledge had a chance for an overhand winner right at the net, but couldn’t put it away as the Bears edged them for the deciding win.

The victory capped a fourth straight undefeated regular season for the Brook who have firmly established themselves as the class of the league since joining the PSAA in 2018. This is the second straight Championship for coach Justin Laible since taking over the reigns of the team last season. The win also set the stage for a historic day at the Brook as three teams won league championships on home soil. Following the tennis victory, the JV and varsity volleyball teams swept their way to PSAA Tournament wins.
