Yesterday afternoon the volleyball team earned its 20th consecutive home victory with a 3-0 sweep of Long Island Lutheran, securing in the process a third consecutive regular season championship and second consecutive PSAA East Division crown. The victory was made even sweeter as it fell on senior day for a special group that has anchored the most successful era in Stony Brook volleyball history.

The Bears jumped out to a 4-0 lead when Leslie Kang aces bookended a kill from Bekah Detwiler. Consecutive kills from Detwiler pushed the lead to 11-4, Ava McCormick’s third kill of the game moved it to 17-5, and back-to-back Niamh Scanlon aces extended the edge to 20-5. The Crusaders did not go quietly however as they engineered a 9-3 run to pull within 23-14, but Detwiler closed the game with consecutive spikes as the Bears took the win, 25-14.

In game two, LuHi opened with an ace and, thanks to some gritty play and unforced errors from the Bears, continued to hold the lead at 14-12. That’s when a Kang ace ignited an 8-0 run, punctuated by a Detwiler spike and a Nadia Hall kill, that left the Bears ahead 21-14 and poised to take control of the match. An errant Crusader shot capped a long rally and the game as the Bears took it, 25-17.

In game three, LuHi again took the first two points, but a 7-0 run, during which Hall registered 3 kills, Detwiler 2 kills, and Natalie Stefaniuk 1 ace, allowed the Bears to grab a lead they would not relinquish. The Crusaders would get as close as 11-8, but a Shannuel Lamptey kill over two blockers and an Arden Madden ace pushed the lead back to 14-8. Consecutive Hall kills swelled the lead to 19-14 before Detwiler killed three of the last four points to close out the game, 25-15, along with the East Division-clinching victory.

Detwiler finished with 14 kills on the day while Elizabeth Robbins anchored the defense with 41 digs. The Bears are back in action tomorrow with a non-league match-up at Half Hollow Hills West.
