On this day eight years ago, the girls’ basketball team won a fourth consecutive Suffolk Class C Championship in a 37-24 win over Southold. Here is the recap of the game from Henry Marcus of Newsday.

Burke Helps Lead Way to 4th Straight ‘C’ Title

There’s no denying Stony Brook’s Danielle Spiliotis is the go-to player for her team.

She’s averaging 20 points per game and has helped lift Stony Brook to the top of League VIII and Class C in Suffolk.

What about when she’s not having a great game? Such was the case Friday as Stony Brook survived an off-game from the senior center in a 37-24 win over Southold in the Suffolk Class C final at Center Moriches.

It was the fourth straight Class C title for Stony Brook (15-3), which will face Shelter Island in the C/D final at Longwood on Wednesday.

“They know us so well,” Stony Brook coach Keith Singer said of Southold. “But we had a balanced attack in the first half that helped us.”

Brannon Burke led Stony Brook with 10 points, Sadie Singer had nine, and Spiliotis and Jessica Winston each added eight points. “Our team is a family,” Burke said. “It’s our duty as a family to pick up the slack when one of us is having an off-game.”

Spiliotis didn’t allow her offense to effect the rest of her game as she chipped in nine rebounds and four blocked shots. “It’s awesome to see everyone else scoring,” Spiliotis said. “My shot being off didn’t stop me from playing my heart out on defense.”

Stony Brook’s offensive balance was a big factor in the first half as four of its five starters each scored five or more points to help the Bears take a 27-13 lead.

Southold (9-9), led by Kim VanBourgondien and Aly Dey with 11 points each, made a run in the third and fourth quarters, cutting a 31-13 deficit to 31-18 with 5:45 left, but Spiliotis answered with a three-pointer to push the lead to 34-18 with 5:26 left.

Said Keith Singer: “[Spiliotis] didn’t have her best game, but she hit the big three when we needed it.”

  1. To the Stony Brook Bears 2017/2018 Basketball Team-

On behalf of The Toney Family, we wish you all success next season. You are all great and will do very well. Remember…there’s no “I” in T-E-A-M.

To Emil & James – all the best to you both in College. It’s bittersweet to see you both go your separate ways. The “A Better Chance Program” bought you both together and this will not be the end of hearing great things you are both destined to accomplish.

You both played some amazing basketball. Loved seeing you all play.

    Love,
    The Toney Family
