This afternoon in Curacao, Jyles Etienne cleared 7′ 1″ to earn the bronze medal in the Under-20 high jump at the 46th CARIFTA Games. One year ago Etienne struck gold at CARIFTA in the Under-18 high jump with a leap of 6′ 9.5″.
Etienne entered the competition at 6′ 6.75″ and cleared it on his first attempt. He then soared over 6′ 8.75″ and 6′ 9.75″ without incident. He proceeded to top 6′ 11″ on his second attempt, but missed his first two attempts at 7′ 0.25″. In need of a huge jump, Etienne cleared it to earn a 7-foot clearance for the second time in his last two competitions. Etienne proceeded to top 7′ 1″ on his first attempt before bowing out after three tries at his personal best of 7′ 1.25″. His finish helped Team Bahamas to a third place finish for the second straight year behind Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago.
Etienne’s next major competition comes in less than two weeks at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia where he will attempt to improve on his 2nd place finish from a season ago.
