Rebecca Crane knifes through the water

The following is a guest post from our Director of Athletics, Jeremy Donovan.

Well, a new school year has dawned, and with it comes a new place to find our monthly Bear Paws entry. If this is your first time clicking over to this blog, I invite you to take a good look around. Few high school athletic programs (or college programs, for that matter) can boast a more complete source for both current athletic stories and historical context for our athletes. I defy you to find a relevant SBS athletic fact that isn’t represented here. In fact, if you do find any, please let us know so we can share it with our community.

The school year has started off with energy and enthusiasm, and so has our brand new Girls’ Swim team. Under the masterful guidance of coach Marc Danin, the girls are already tearing up the water with big goals. Captains Elise Mitchell ’16, Dasha Romanova ’16, and Rachel Crane ’18 have helped to set a positive tone paired with an unrelenting work ethic. Youngsters Rebecca Crane ’20, Hannah DiLavore ’20, Wuraola Obasanjo ’20, Kate Jones ’21, Zara Pulipati ’21, and Sarah Wynter ’21 have injected plenty of youth to this upstart program and give hope for strong continuity going forward.

Our Boys’ Cross Country team is rebuilding with a healthy dose of newcomers, including standouts  Justin Moreno ’18 and Lucas Otero-Novas Gomez ’18,  to go along with returners Matthew Wong ’16, Tion Wong ’16, Peter Van Zeijts ’18, Christian Cataudella ’19, and Harrison Plhak ’19. It will be interesting to see what coach Jake Morley can coax from these boys.

Meanwhile, the Girls’ Cross Country squad returns most of their core with Miranda Harrigan ’18, Nicole Gray ’16, Sam Taveras ’16, Anna Brummeler ’17, Cianka Haynes ’17 and Danielle Sivertsen ‘18 once again leading the way for coach Alicia Brummeler.

Coach Mike Hickey’s Golf team has seen impressive performances from Rosa Jones ’16 and Steven Ou ’19 and a youth invasion with middle schoolers Jamie Barkhume ’20, Steven Saraniero ’20, and Harry Ou ’21 all shooting for a chance to contribute.

Last year’s Boys’ Soccer team barely missed a playoff berth, but captains Khendrick Beausoleil ’16, Inpyo Ma ’16, and Caleb Lindo ’17 are on a mission not to let it happen again. Jonathan Chung ’16, Mac Bohuny ’17, David Choi ’17, Ben DiRuggiero ’17, Haban Weon ‘17 and David Choi ’18 all return to help in the fight and are joined by Alvaro Martinez-Torres ’18, David Wadding ’18, and Jai Narain ’19. It could be a very exciting year for coach Doug Parra.

Coach Mark Maningo returns as the winningest coach in school history along with All-State midfielder Morgan Pius ’17 and All-League winger Annie Skorobohaty ’16. Big things are expected from Laura Reeve ’16, Dahlia Cyrille ’18, Ella Simmons ’19 and new arrivals Jessica Nwachukwu ’18, Alyssa Martinez ’19, and Donna Sanders ’19.

Along with an undefeated League Championship last year came promotion into a higher league for our Girls’ Tennis team. Phenom Sadhana Sridhar ’20 has already beaten the number 1 players at two of the top schools in the county, and Melinda Chen ’16, Brianna Holochuck ’16, Jessie Xiao ’16, Gracie Xie ’16, Julia Braat ’18, Olivia Braat ’18, Marta Bennett ’20 and the rest of the team can face this tough new challenge. Coach Jennifer Crane has proven success at building mentally tough players to meet the demand.

Lastly, our Volleyball team is hoping to take the next step after losing a tough match in the County Championships last year. Joy Ezi ’16, Allisa Holt ’16, Marlee Painter ’16, Chelsea Winston ’16, Margaret Rudzitis ’17, Hannah Detwiler ’18, Danielle Graves ’18, and Sam Petersen ’18 are all back to bring the thunder for coach Leslie Paige.

It should be a great Fall, I hope you can get out to join us at some events.

Go Bears!
