On this day three years ago, Taylor Colucci became Stony Brook’s second individual National Champion, and the first in 62 years, when he won the Emerging Elite 200 meters at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, NC.
Heading into the finals in 5th place after a time of 22.18, the senior ran a school record time of 21.80 in the finals to best the deep field. Despite running from the difficult position of lane 7, Colucci edged Jaalen Jones of Maylene, Alabama by 0.03 seconds for the historic win.

With the victory, Colucci joined Paul Cuffari as the school’s only National Champions. Cuffari took 1st place in the 12-pound shot put at the National Prep School Track and Field Championships held at Madison Square Garden in 1950.
