On this day 72 years ago, the baseball team edged Port Jefferson in what Res Gestae 1943 dubbed the “most exciting contest of the year.”

The game featured a pitcher’s duel between Port’s “Red” Kerwin and Bob Swanson, who gave up five hits, though the yearbook mentions that two should have been played cleanly for outs. Heading into the final frame, the Brook had a 2-0 edge when Port came back to knot the game and send it into extra innings.

After riding Swanson’s arm for most of the game, the Brook rode his bat and legs to victory as he singled, then eventually came home on a wild throw from the right fielder for a 3-2 win.

Charlie Medd was the offensive star of the game, recording 3 hits and 2 runs.
