Hickey a Top Finisher in Yankee Stadium 5k

August 9, 2011

On Sunday morning Dan Hickey ’04 took to the starting line of the 3rd Annual Damon Runyon 5k at Yankee Stadium.  3,067 runners descended on River Avenue in the Bronx, flooding the home of the New York Yankees and raising over $615,000 for cancer research.  13 heats of about 300 runners were released 15 minutes apart throughout the morning.  Hickey was in the 1st heat of the day and after Roy White, a former Yankee from the 1977 and 1978 World Series Championship teams, began the race with a blast from an air horn, Hickey sprang off the starting line with a pack of 7 other runners in an effort to separate from the flood of other competitors.

The route took them around the entire circumference of the stadium twice by way of the concessions concourse, around the playing field twice, to the upper deck concourse twice by way of stairs and back down to the ground level twice by way of the steep exit ramps.  It was not like a typical 5k which most often happens on a road or park course.  The runners charging through the cavernous tunnels of one of the world’s most famous arenas had to maneuver hair-pin turns, slick concrete floors, steep stairs and a variety of other obstacles, not the least of which was a poorly marked course that almost derailed the leaders early in the race.

Hickey finished 5th in his heat and 7th overall.  He ran in honor of his former coach, mentor and friend Robin Lingle who succumbed to brain cancer in April 2007 after a heroic battle with the disease.

Check out highlights of the race on My Fox New York.  Hickey is wearing his white Stony Brook track jersey and lime green shoes.  He is visible in the video at 0:09, 0:50, 1:37 and 2:53.
