Boys’ Track 2011: Season Review

Colucci, Lawson and White celebrate the 4×100 school record at the County Championships

The team record would indicate that the 2011 boys track season was a decent one, but upon closer examination it may have been one of the finest in school history:

  • The 4×100 meter relay team of Taylor Colucci, Khoren Lawson, Jon Wentling, and Andrew White reset the school record twice, becoming the first team in history to go under 43 seconds in 42.96. The team won the Class B County Championship and ran the second-best time in all of Suffolk County during the 2011 season.
  • Khoren Lawson qualified for the New York State Meet in three events and a relay, repeating as the Class B County Champion in the triple jump. He ran the fastest 100 meter FAT time in school history at the St. Anthony’s Invitational in 11.06 and won the triple jump at the Division Championships.
  • Taylor Colucci qualified for States in two individual events and a relay, repeating as the Class B County Champion in the 100 meter and the 200 meters. He also ran the fastest 200 meter FAT time in school history in 22.34.
  • Andrew White showed promise as a sophomore, finishing 10th in the County in the 200 meters and helping the Brook complete a Class B sweep in the event at the County Championships.
  • The team finished the season ranked #5 in New York State.

It was a year that saw the Bears compete in such prestigious events as the New York Relays, the Penn Relays, and the Loucks Games, representing the Blue and White well in each of them. It was also a season that gave us hope in a bright future as Colucci and White will return along with Marco Masakayan, Haya Nakanishi, Thomas Peckham, Wyatt Piazza, Jake Harrington, Matt Hollis, and Brian Jeong.

A gaping hole will be left by those graduating as Khoren Lawson, Jon Wentling, Tyler Anderson, and Forrest Hull will move on to college. Special recognition must go out to Lawson who will leave Stony Brook for the University of Southern California as one of the most decorated track and field athletes in school history:

  • School record holder in six events: Indoor 55 meters (6.58), indoor 60 meters (7.16), indoor triple jump (44′ 3.25″), 100 meters FAT (11.02), triple jump (44′ 2.5″) & first leg of 4×100 meter relay (42.96).
  • Two-time All-State
  • Four-time All-County
  • Two-time Suffolk County Champion
  • Division II Champion
  • 2011 Swanson Superior Performance Trophy
  • 2010 Swanson Best All-Around Athlete Trophy
  • Two-time Downey Boys Track Award recipient
