On this day 54 years ago, the basketball team clinched the Ivy League Championship, their first since 1949. In a 75-42 romp over St. Paul’s, the boys officially clinched the crown for only the second time in school history. Behind strong efforts by Stony Brook Hall of Famers Allan Malachuk and Frank Visted, the Brook built an insurmountable 41-20 halftime lead. Malachuk and Visted finished with 20 and 19 points, respectively, while Bruce Strong chipped in with 10. As the final horn sounded the boys hoisted coach coach Jim Fenton onto their shoulders, celebrating the first hardwood championship in eight years.
